Oceans Edge
Aiken, John
1986-88, Purbeck and Portland stone, 105 x 50 x 70 (Purchased 1992)
John Aiken was born in 1950 in Belfast John Aiken began he’s career as a sculptor. He studied in the Chelsea College of art, London and the British school in Rome. He is currently a professor of fine art and sculpture, Slade School of fine art, University College, London. The sound of a blown conch shell is to meso-American and other non-western culture, what the sound of the church bell is western culture: the marking of time, prayer, celebration. Bell and shell. For those who know both sounds, these stones of Aikens call to mind the enormous difference, as stark as that of night and day or land and ocean.
