George Barret, born 1728, in Dublin began his career as a painter of British landscapes and weathers. A forerunner of romantic landscape painting in a style variously influened by Wilson and Salvator Rosa, and the theory of the sublime of Edward Burke.

This work dates from his early career and displays his notable skills at representing water in the landscape. It more than hints at the romantic sense of nature persists in later styles with 20th century modernism work that does not stress, literal-visual representational details as Barret’s does.
