Still Life with... Cindy Cummings
Family Movement workshop
Cindy Cummings is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning dance artist based in Dublin. Described by Dance Europe magazine as ‘a performer with something to say and the talent and skill to say it with style’, Cindy has evolved a witty and layered practice which regularly crosses boundaries between dance, theatre and live art.
The subjects Cindy investigates range from the immediately recognizable (‘Hitch’s Bitches’, with Todd Winkler) to more abstract ideas. Unifying her practice are several themes: the centrality of play and humour as tools of creative interrogation; the vulnerable and mutable place of the body within dance tradition; a passion for scientific ideas, rigour and innovation; and a constant engagement with how movement in space, interacting with visual, sonic and dramatic impulses, can be used to as both medium and text of essential human communication.
A hallmark of Cindy’s practice is collaboration with international artists from different disciplines. This allows Cindy to refine her artistic concerns and find new ways, through form, technology and content, of articulating the questions that fascinate her. Cindy is currently working with Paris based media artists Anne Cleary and Denis Connolly on a series of dance workshops and performances in conjunction with their interactive installation work.
Cindy is one of the first dance artists in Ireland to become a member of Aosdána, an honorary association of creative artists in Ireland. She has presented her own work worldwide, has choreographed widely for theatre, film and TV (most recently 'Her Mother's Daughters' as part of 'Dance on the Box'), and has performed as an actor/dancer with many theatre and dance companies. Since 2004, she has been a member of the Dublin based, ground-breaking, dance research/performance collective the Genesis Project.
