Art From The Rucksack 3 - Japan/Ireland Artists Exchange Exhibition

Limerick City Gallery of Art is very pleased to present an innovative international exchange exhibition, Art from the Rucksack 3. This exhibition is the exciting culmination of an Ireland/Japan exchange which involves new site specific work created by six contemporary Japanese artists.

Limerick City Gallery of Art is very pleased to present an innovative international exchange exhibition, Art from the Rucksack 3. This exhibition is the exciting culmination of an Ireland/Japan exchange which involves new site specific work created by six contemporary Japanese artists.
Imagine the possible results of six artists given the following brief:  All transported work should be carried in a rucksack or flight holdall, with the possibility of sourcing additional materials and equipment locally and then artists have just one week to create and install their exhibition.
The return exchange entitled: Art from the Rucksack 3, opens to the public at the Limerick City Gallery of Art on September  6th 2007.This exhibition will feature the work of six Japanese contemporary artists who work at CAP House International in Kobe, Japan. The participating artists are Tomoko Sugiyama (Print/Installation), Aya Sakoda (Sculpture), Masako Nakazawa (Ceramic), Kenchi Higashino (Painting/Storyteller), Yuki Tsukiyama (Sculpture), and Yukinori Yamamura (Installation).

The exhibition will be opened by his Excellency Mr. Keiichi Hayashi, the Ambassador of Japan to Ireland.
Art from the Rucksack 3 is co-curated by Sean Taylor, Shimoda Nobuhisa (director, CAP HOUSE Project) and Yukinori Yamamura. The initiating exhibition of Irish artists occurred in July 2007 hosted in CAP House International Galleries, Kobe, Japan. This exhibition featured the work of six Irish Contemporary artists: Danny Mc Carthy (Sound Art), Micky Donnelly (Painting), Sarah Browne (Installation Art), Sean Lynch (Installation Art/Sculpture), Clare McLoughlin (Ceramic/Sculpture) and Sean Taylor (Video/Sound).

Meet Tomoko SUGIYAMA, Yuki TSUKIYAMA, Aya SAKODA, Masako NAKAZAWA, Kenichi HIGASHINO


BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES:
Kenichi HIGASHINO Born in Kobe, Japan in 1947. Creates original Patu (scroll paintings) and performs as ‘a Patua’ (storyteller). Kenichi will perform A Snail in LCGA on the opening night September  6th.
Masako NAKAZAWA Born in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan in 1978. Studied Ceramics and now teaches at Osaka University of Arts. Her process of working in clay is a metaphor for the fragility of human existence.
Aya SAKODA Studied sculpture in the Nihon University and graduated in 2003. Her work involves producing installations which deal with the fragility of materials.
Tomoko SUGIYAMA Born in Kobe, Japan in 1958. Her work examines familiar symbols such as house, bowl, field or star, then simplifying their shapes to emphasise their particular meaning.
Yuki TSUKIYAMA Born in Kobe, Japan in 1976. Studied sculpture at Kyoto University.  His concepts originate while watching sports games and he aims to create work inspired by GAA while in Ireland.
Yukinori YAMAMURA Born in Kobe, Japan in 1972. Studied at Oslo National Academy, Norway and Osaka University, Japan. His work is inspired by travel and the experience of different cultures.
